{"id":37,"date":"2014-11-23T13:28:42","date_gmt":"2014-11-23T13:28:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mfasia.org\/stepitup\/?page_id=37"},"modified":"2015-07-18T16:42:56","modified_gmt":"2015-07-18T08:42:56","slug":"domestic-workers","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/cmw25.mfasia.org\/?page_id=37","title":{"rendered":"Migrant domestic workers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Domestic work is an important occupation for millions of individuals, accounting for up to 10 per cent of total employment in some countries. \u00a0The trend over the past decades has been a growing prevalence of migrants among domestic workers with the overwhelming majority of these workers being women. \u00a0Migrant domestic workers are at heightened risk of certain forms of exploitation and abuse. \u00a0At the heart of their vulnerability is isolation and dependence, which can include the following elements: \u00a0being far away from family, lack of basic support systems, unfamiliarity with the language and culture, lack of knowledge of \u00a0national labour and migration laws, \u00a0dependence on the job and employer because of migration-related debt and\/or sponsorship systems, legal status, employers restricting freedom of movement, employers holding passports and other documents, and reliance of families back home on remittances. \u00a0Women migrant domestic workers face additional risks related to their gender, including gender-based violence. \u00a0These risks and vulnerabilities are further aggravated for migrant domestic workers who are undocumented, not least because they often face the risk of deportation if they contact State authorities to seek protection from abusive employers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1><strong>Recent posts in this section<\/strong><\/h1>\n<div class=\"add_posts\"><ul><div class=\"add_posts_content\" style=\"clear:both;\"><h2 class=\"title\" style=\"clear: none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cmw25.mfasia.org\/?p=836\">Documents from the Committee on Migrant Workers' General Discussion marking the 25th Anniversary of CMW<\/a><\/h2><div class=\"post-content\" style=\"clear:both\";><p><a href=\"http:\/\/cmw25.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-837\" src=\"http:\/\/cmw25.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/5.jpg\" alt=\"5\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mfasia.org\/cmw25\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/5.jpg 700w, https:\/\/mfasia.org\/cmw25\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/5-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mfasia.org\/cmw25\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/5-440x294.jpg 440w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Last 8 September 2015, the UN Committee on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families (the Committee) organized a half-day general discussion to mark the 25<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the adoption of the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families.\u00a0 The general discussion was a public meeting in which representatives of States, United Nations bodies and specialised agencies, civil society and other relevant organisations as well as individual experts are welcome to participate.<\/p>\n<p>The panel discussion focused on the multiple human rights abuses faced by migrant workers, and challenges for States on how to best address these issues in the context of migrant workers in the Gulf, undocumented children in the Americas, and irregular migration flows in the Mediterranean. Each of these discussions underlined the importance of an agreed international human rights framework, including stepping up ratifications of the Convention. These children and families often undertake perilous journeys and are met with xenophobia, violence and\u2014increasingly\u2014with detention despite having committed no crime and without being a threat to others.<\/p>\n<p>There is now overwhelmingly clear guidance from the United Nations system that the immigration detention of children is a violation of rights to liberty and family life. Non-custodial, community-based alternatives to detention (ATD) are increasingly being implemented in a variety of country contexts.
