International Migrants Day<\/strong><\/p>\n

18th December 2015<\/p>\n

We \u00a0wish \u00a0to \u00a0congratulate \u00a0the \u00a018 \u00a0lakhs \u00a0of \u00a0Sri \u00a0Lankan\u00a0 \u00a0Migrant\u00a0 \u00a0Workers \u00a0for \u00a0celebrating \u00a0their 16th\u00a0Migrants Day.\u00a0 \u00a0International \u00a0Migrants \u00a0Day \u00a0is \u00a0an \u00a0international \u00a0day \u00a0observed\u00a0 \u00a0on 18 \u00a0December as\u00a0International Migrants Day \u00a0appointed by the \u00a0General \u00a0Assembly \u00a0of \u00a0United \u00a0Nations \u00a0on 4 December\u00a02000 taking \u00a0into account \u00a0the large and increasing \u00a0number \u00a0of migrant \u00a0in the world.<\/p>\n

Sri Lankan \u00a0Migrant \u00a0Workers have contributed USD 7 Billion \u00a0to the Sri Lankan \u00a0economy \u00a0last year. In short we can take for granted \u00a0that they only have been keeping \u00a0the Sri Lankan \u00a0economy \u00a0rolling along. Which is by far the highest \u00a0Foreign \u00a0Exchange earner \u00a0overtaking the contributions made by the exports of Apparels, \u00a0Ceylon \u00a0Tea or Ceylon \u00a0Cinnamon.<\/p>\n

At the same \u00a0time \u00a0we wish \u00a0to highlight \u00a0that \u00a0the Good \u00a0Governance Government must \u00a0give them \u00a0their voting \u00a0rights which \u00a0has been \u00a0enshrined on them \u00a0by the Sri Lanka’s 2nd \u00a0Republican Constitution. We are made to understand that\u00a0 the issue \u00a0in undertaking the same \u00a0is logistical \u00a0issues and that such \u00a0issues are overcome \u00a0and the coming Local Government and Provincial Council \u00a0elections they would \u00a0be able to exercise \u00a0their franchise at the Sri Lankan \u00a0High Commissions or Embassies in the country \u00a0in which they \u00a0currently \u00a0work \u00a0in. Further\u00a0 \u00a0learning \u00a0on this \u00a0matter could be obtained \u00a0from \u00a0the \u00a0Filipino \u00a0system, where \u00a0all Filipino \u00a0are able \u00a0to exercise their \u00a0franchise \u00a0in through \u00a0the embassies in the\u00a0 countries \u00a0they work in at election \u00a0time.<\/p>\n

In addition \u00a0to \u00a0which \u00a0we \u00a0also \u00a0wish \u00a0to \u00a0highlight \u00a0that \u00a0the \u00a0Good \u00a0Governance Government also \u00a0allows Migrant Workers\u00a0 \u00a0to \u00a0form\u00a0\u00a0 in \u00a0to \u00a0trade \u00a0unions \u00a0and \u00a0be \u00a0able \u00a0to \u00a0register \u00a0their \u00a0Trade \u00a0Union \u00a0under \u00a0the Commissioner General \u00a0of Labour.<\/p>\n

Also \u00a0we wish \u00a0to highlight that \u00a0all embassies in the \u00a0Middle \u00a0East Countries be able \u00a0to retain \u00a0a Legal Consultant on a full \u00a0time \u00a0basis, \u00a0as was done \u00a0by the \u00a0Bangaladeshi government to \u00a0look \u00a0into the \u00a0legal aspects of nationals \u00a0who are held in jails and detention \u00a0centres \u00a0for various \u00a0crimes \u00a0and other charges.<\/p>\n

We wish them well in their future \u00a0struggles and to keep the Sri Lankan \u00a0Flag flying \u00a0high!<\/p>\n
